Researching provenance addresses ethical issues regarding contemporary stewardship. Traditionally, provenance research is the study of ownership (from an artwork’s origin to its current destination), exhibition, physical location, and publication through time. It examines legal issues surrounding transactions and transnational movements in an artwork’s history. But provenance research is concerned with more than chains of ownership; it also helps identify contemporary people and communities connected to artifacts and to build partnerships and collaborations that reveal suppressed histories, fill gaps and correct flawed or racially-biased research. This vital role contributes to the Museum’s broader commitment to anti-racism and equitable opportunities for all.

Duration: The Summer Internship Program runs eight continuous weeks and 28 hours per week, from June 9th to August 1st.

Work Schedule: This internship is a part-time, onsite position, required to work onsite 4 days per week.

Responsibilities:

· Use a risk assessment tool to guide provenance research on prioritized objects from Thailand of Cambodia exploring physical and digital archives, institutional files, secondary literature, catalogs, AI tools, and relevant databases to trace objects’ histories.

· Assist in creating detailed case studies for the Museum’s website, examining the provenance of selected objects, geographic regions, or specific provenance themes in the collections.

· Regularly update e-museum entries with accurate provenance data, including research findings related to the objects’ origins, ownership history, and cultural context.

· Help document and maintain accurate provenance research and sources in both digital and hard-copy institutional files, including the TMS collections management system.

· Contribute to research on past collectors, auction houses, galleries, and dealers, helping to understand the constituencies and institutions connected to the objects in the collection.

· Assist the Registrar department with additional tasks as needed.
