Reservations & Group Visits

All guests, Newark Residents, and affiliate partners must reserve tickets in advance. There will be no on-site ticket sales. Membership cards and other applicable IDs will be verified upon entry. For members, your card is your ticket, no advance ticketing is necessary.

Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more people. Groups of 20 or more people may be asked to stagger their entry times.

Accessibility

The Newark Museum of Art’s campus is fully ADA-compliant, and we welcome visitors with all accessibility needs. All galleries and levels of the Museum are accessible by elevator. Wheelchair-accessible and gender-neutral restrooms are available.

The Bamberger Entrance at 49 Washington St has a wheelchair ramp for Museum access. The doorway is equipped with an automatic opener. Our South Wing entrance on Horizon Plaza has an accessible elevator for wheelchair usage.

Manual wheelchairs are available in the Welcome Center, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating, some with charging stations, is available throughout the Museum Campus. Portable stools are also available in the Welcome Center, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Gallery Guidelines

Visitors are encouraged to explore the galleries, engage with Museum staff, and participate in immersive experiences.

For the safety of each other and the collection, all visitors must observe the following general guidelines while visiting the Museum:

  • Refrain from touching any art or artifacts on display.
  • Eating and drinking is permitted in designated areas only. No food or drink in the galleries.
  • Non-commercial photography is permitted, except where indicated. Flash, tripods, and selfie sticks are not allowed.
  • Sketching with graphite pencil is allowed in the galleries. No ink, paint, or pastels allowed.
  • Walk. Do not run.
  • Children must not be left unattended in any area of the Museum.
  • All backpacks must be left in Coat Check.
  • Bulky coats may be worn or carried on the person’s front only or left in Coat Check.
  • Large or wet umbrellas must be left in Coat Check.
  • Skateboards, roller skates, and rollerblades are not permitted in the galleries and must be left in the lockers available for visitors.
  • Our galleries are stroller friendly!
  • We love your pets, but only service animals are permitted on Museum grounds.

What's Closed

Due to unforeseen construction in an adjacent building on Washington Street, The Ballantine House will be temporarily closed from Thursday, July 25 – Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The Planetarium will be closed August 19 – September 29, 2024, for yearly maintenance.

MakerSPACE is closed.

For your safety, high-touch and small-space areas will remain closed, including:

  • Fire Museum
  • Old Stone School House

Parking

Parking is available next to the Museum for a $10 fee, with entrances located on Washington Street and Central Avenue. Payment is through Pay by App and Text to Pay. Follow payment instructions displayed on-site. Cash payment is not available. This process might be different for some Museum events.

Members with a Complimentary Parking Pass do not need to use the app to reserve parking. Passes must be displayed in the windshield of vehicles to receive the free parking benefit.

Getting Here by Public Transportation

You may take NJ Transit trains to either Newark Penn Station or Broad Street Station.

PATH trains go to Newark Penn Station. From Newark Penn Station – The Newark Light Rail connects Penn Station to the Broad Street Station.

There are two options for taking the Light Rail to the Museum from Newark Penn Station:

1) Take the Grove St bound Light Rail to the Washington Street Stop. Exit to your left and start walking on Washington St towards Warren St. The Museum is located 5 blocks down at the Central & Washington Street intersection.

2) Take the Broad St bound Light Rail to the Atlantic Street Stop. Exit to your right. Walk past the parking garage on your left toward Lombardy Street. Make a right onto Lombardy Street. Walk toward Broad Street and cross over to Washington Park. The Museum is located across the Park on Washington Street.

1) Take bus #30 towards Kearny N Arlington. Ride the bus for 4 stops. Exit bus at Broad St & Lombardy St. The Museum is located across Washington Park on Washington St.

2) Take any bus #11, #28, or #72 towards Wayne Willowbrook. Ride the bus for 7 stops. Exit bus at Washington St & Washington Pl. The Museum is located right across the street from the stop.
