Meet the Filmmaker

Carolina Markowicz

Director, Screenwriter

Carolina Markowicz is a screenwriter and director based in São Paulo, Brazil. Her first short film, 69 LUZ SQUARE, won several awards around the world, including best short film at Rio De Janeiro International Film Festival, and was screened at MoMa. TATUAPÉ MAHAL TOWER, which she wrote and co-directed, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2014. There, Carolina was considered one of the “five filmmakers to watch” by curator Shane Smith at Co-Create. TATUAPÉ MAHAL TOWER is one of the most awarded short films of 2014 in Brazil and has been selected to more than 200 festivals around the world, including Edinburgh, Warsaw, Atlanta, Florida, Toulouse, and Havana. Awards include Best Screenplay and 15 Best Film accolades. It was among Best Of The Year of Vimeo Staff Picks 2017.

In September 2015, she was one of the 10 emerging filmmakers invited to be part of TIFF’s Talent Lab, whose mentors were Wim Wenders, Jim Stark, Christine Vauchon and Malgorzata Szumowska. In 2018, she was selected to be a part of Berlinale Talents and the Locarno Filmmakers Academy, where she was part of a piece at Indiewire that showcased “some of the world’s most exciting new filmmakers”.

POSTERGADOS is her third short film, with actor César Bordón (WILD TALES) and Mirella Pascual (WHISKY). It premiered at Festival de Biarritz 2017 and won best screenplay at Gramado. Her fourth short project, LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP, premiered at TIFF 2017 and had its US premiere at SXSW 2018, and was screened at many festivals including Palm Springs, Atlanta, and Melbourne. Her most recent short, THE ORPHAN, premiered at the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2018, and won the Queer Palm. It was also selected to Locarno, TIFF 2018, AFI, SXSW (where it won a Special Jury Recognition Award) and more than 80 festivals. It has been collecting many awards worldwide. Carolina was one of the 5 international directors invited to be part of 2019 Factory Edition in Bosnia this March, in which she will co-write and co-direct a short film that will be screened at the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2019. She is currently raising funds for her feature project WHEN MY LIFE WAS MY LIFE, which has been selected for a São Paulo Film Comission doctoring grant, Ibermedia, Australab and Cinemart at IFF Rotterdam. She is also developing the feature film TOLL, a recipient of a Tribeca All Access® development grant.
