Participants will learn about Siddi quilting traditions and our project, Chronicles in Cloth. The project celebrates the textile arts of the Siddi community of Karnataka province, India, an African diasporic group with a rich cultural heritage.
A quilting bee is a gathering where people come together to sew, share stories, and build community. In this program, The Newark Museum of Art community will explore Siddi textile traditions alongside members of the Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild (MQG).
Following an introduction, Princeton Sankofa Stitchers MQG members will share their Siddi-inspired quilts and experiences learning this distinctive technique. Participants from The Newark Museum of Art community will enjoy demonstrations, create a Siddi-inspired quilt piece to take home, and customize fabric pieces that will be incorporated into a collaborative quilt created by Siddi women. Discussions will explore quilting as an art form, textile traditions, and community-based making. Materials provided.
About Princeton Sankofa Stitchers MQG: The guild celebrates the legacy of African American quilting by sharing experiences, educating others through demonstrations and workshops, and transforming traditional quilting ideas by incorporating ethnic patterns and fabrics.
