Have you ever pondered the messages conveyed by works of art? In these unique sessions, members like you engage in enlightening conversations led by our knowledgeable museum experts, exploring the nuances and stories behind some of the NMOA’s most cherished artworks.

Masks are a universal phenomenon. From wooden African ceremonial masks to gold ones from ancient South America and protective headgear from Europe and Asia, they often hold a deep and significant place in various cultures throughout the world.

In this fun, family-friendly workshop, you’ll create your own disguise inspired by a plank mask known as nwantantay designed by the Baga people of Burkina Faso. We’ll use decorative checkerboard paper and black-and-white graphic symbols reminiscent of its brightly painted black, white, and red geometric patterns. You’ll also learn more about the nwantantay in our Arts of Global Africa collection, and the rich tradition it and others are part of.

This free Member Experience will be led by Mansa K. Mussa, a visual artist, arts educator, curator, and consultant who taught visual and performing arts at NMOA from 1990 to 2020. He currently teaches at the Montclair Art Museum, The Visual Art Center of New Jersey, and Arts For Kids, Inc. All supplies will be provided. Register now for this exciting hands-on event!
